Also known as Mandylion, Greek for towel, or Acheiropoieton, Greek for "icon not made by hand," the Holy Napkin is traditionally regarded as the first icon or image of Christ. Tradition holds that King Avgarus, who was aflicted with leporasy, sent an artist from his court to find and bring back a portrait of Christ as he believed the image of Our Lord along would be sufficient to heal him. The artist was unsuccessful in capturing Christ's likeness, however, Christ took a cloth and pressed it to his face where Christ's true likeness was captured. The cloth was then presented to the king, who was healed of his illness. King Avgarus later converted to Christianity and became one of the first Christian kings.
